Le Café

₹ Budget

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram's beachfront café on Goubert Avenue. Sea-view seating, simple food, honest coffee. One of the most pleasantly situated spots on the promenade.

Le Café is run by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and sits directly on Goubert Avenue facing the Bay of Bengal. It is not trying to be a destination restaurant: the menu is straightforward (coffee, tea, smoothies, cakes, salads, light sandwiches), the prices are fair, and the sea is right there.

The building has a history worth knowing. It was originally the port office for the railway that once ran from South Boulevard to the old boulevard along Beach Road. In 1952, a powerful cyclone destroyed the pier that connected both destinations. The remains of the pier can still be seen jutting out into the water — a piece of Pondicherry's vanished infrastructure visible from the café terrace.

The terrace tables overlooking the ocean are what people come for. In the early morning, before the beach road fills with traffic, this is one of the most peaceful spots in the city. It is also one of the few places on the promenade where you can sit, order something, and stay.

As an Ashram institution, the atmosphere is quieter and more contemplative than the French Quarter cafés. No alcohol.

Must Order

  • Filter coffee
  • Fresh lime soda
  • Cake of the day
