December
New Year
December 31 into January 1
Pondicherry's New Year is, by Indian city standards, unusually calm: beachfront crowds along the Promenade, music drifting through the White Town, and December's cool dry air making it the most comfortable night of the year to be outside.
The night
On December 31, Pondicherry gathers at two places: the Promenade Beach and the lanes of the White Town. December is the coolest and driest month on the Coromandel Coast, which makes New Year's Eve genuinely pleasant outdoors. The sea is close, the air is clear, and the informal tradition of counting down at the water's edge has been established for decades. Hotels and bars along Rue Dumas and Rue Suffren host ticketed parties. The pavements of the French Quarter fill with music and people drifting between them.
Eating well
The French Quarter's restaurants offer special New Year menus, mixing French culinary technique with Tamil coastal ingredients in the way that is particular to this city. Book well in advance. Many good tables are gone weeks before December 31. For something more casual, the street food along Beach Road and around Gandhi Thidal is ample and excellent late into the night.
The morning after
January 1 in Pondicherry is slow and beautiful. A walk along the Promenade at dawn, when the fishing boats are coming in and the city is still quiet, is one of the best free things the city offers at any time of year. The International Yoga Festival begins four days later (January 4 to 7), if your resolutions run in that direction.
