Deepavali
New moon of Kartik in the Hindu lunisolar calendar. In 2026, approximately October 20.
Deepavali in Pondicherry follows Tamil custom: families rise at 4 AM, bathe, put on new clothes, and set off firecrackers before sunrise. By evening, oil lamps line the colonial doorsteps of the White Town and the sea reflects the light.
Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya (the new moon night of the month of Kartik) in the Hindu lunisolar calendar. The Gregorian date shifts each year, typically between mid-October and mid-November. For the current year's date, consult the Tamil panchangam or bonjourpondicherry.in.
How Pondicherry celebrates
Deenavali in Pondicherry follows Tamil Nadu custom rather than the North Indian version familiar from films and photographs. The celebration begins before dawn: families rise early, bathe with sesame oil (a purification ritual), dress in new clothes, and light firecrackers in the street outside their homes. This happens before sunrise. By the time the rest of India is waking up, the Tamil quarter has already been through its most intense hour of the festival.
Temple visits
After the early morning rituals, families visit the Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple and other neighbourhood temples for prayers and blessings. The Varadaraja Perumal Temple and Vedapuri Eeswaran Temple also see large gatherings. Lines form quickly in the morning.
The White Town at night
By evening, the French Quarter adds its own quality to the festival. The ochre and cream facades of Rue Dumas and Rue Suffren are lit with oil lamps and string lights. Heritage guesthouses and cafes serve Deepavali thalis alongside their regular menus. Promenade Beach is busy. For those who want to avoid the noise of the firecrackers, Auroville, a short drive north, has a quieter observance.
The sweets
Sweet shops fill with laddus, barfis, jalebis, and Mysore pak. Pondicherry's patisseries produce chocolate modaks and spiced almond biscotti alongside traditional Tamil sweets. Walking through the markets on Nehru Street on Deepavali morning is worth doing for the sweets alone.
